Who wouldn’t want to spend the day with their family at a brewery?
3 Daughters Brewery in St. Petersburg, FL started when Mike Harting (owner/ operator) & Ty Weaver (head brewer/ head chef at the time) were working together on a recipe for beer battered fish and came up with the idea to create their own beer that they would use to batter the fish themselves!
Mike & Ty were brewing together on a one barrel system in Bella Brava and the beer they finally decided to batter their fish in was their “Beach Blonde Blonde Ale” that can still be found in their taproom today! After they had completed their initial task of creating a beer to batter their fish in, they continued to brew and finally decided to sell their shares in the restaurant and to fully commit to brewing.
During construction of the brewery the thought kept running through their heads of how they would be able to put their three daughters through college and that is actually how they happened upon the name of the brewery! While you’re in the tasting room, you can see a brick that was built into one of the corners of the bar that pays homage to Mike’s great grandfather, who owned a brewery in Lexington, Kentucky 100 years ago and opposite that brick, you can see the hand prints of the three daughters who inspired the name of the brewery as well.
Mike & Ty started off the brewery when they found their first 30 barrel system and on site they also have two silos for new grain that’s channeled through to the mill & two for spent grain as well. They use their grain to filter their brews since they don’t have a centrifuge and they give their spent grains to Hi Hat Ranch and other local farms for sustainability. They also have a small batch system for R&D that goes straight to the tasting room, so you have to be there at the brewery to try those brews!
More features of the brewery include a hop garden, an art mural of the story of their beginnings and their own canning line. Their canning line fills up 40 cans per minute and an interesting fact is that they actually use their canning line for St. Petes Brewing Company as well. What was cool about the brewery is that they hit the ground running and started distributing their kegs about six months after they opened and then in about a years time after they opened they started canning.
What was also cool about 3 Daughters was that of the brewery tours I’ve done, this is only the third I’ve seen that has a lab for quality control! The other two breweries who had a lab were Tank Brewing & Barrel of Monks.

What’s also really cool is that they also participate in the USF-St. Pete brewing program which is a ten week online brewing course and when you finish the online portion of the course, in order to complete the program you need to actually work hands on at a brewery! A bunch of breweries in St. Pete’s and beyond participate in offering an internship so you can get your hands dirty and complete the program!
These beers are Florida inspired, St Pete brewed.
Here Are The Explanations From The Brewery:
–Ping Pong Kolsch (4.6% ABV): No description available.
–Rod Bender Red Ale (5.9% ABV): An American style amber with a rich malt flavor that reels you in with a dry toasted chocolate finish. You won’t find a better fishing buddy.
–Mission To Marzen (5.8% ABV): Dark amber in color with creamy white head. The aroma is complex with rich malty sweetness and fruity with hints of caramel. It is medium bodied with high carbonation and a slight alcohol warmth.
–Gluten Friendly Blonde Ale (5.0% ABV): Gluten friendly version of the Beach Blonde Blonde Ale.
–Grapefruit Shandy (3.6% ABV): No description available.
–A Wake Coffee Blonde (5.0% ABV): Don’t let the rich coffee flavor fool you. This one is a bright, slightly sweet, golden blonde ale. Let her surprising twists take your taste buds for a ride.
–Lemon Shandy (3.6% ABV): No description available.
–Floating Dock Light IPA (4.2% ABV): Drinkability. That’s the first word that comes to mind when we’re out on the boat. The first true, light craft beer for distribution in Florida. The aroma is slightly spicy with notes of tropical fruit and watermelon. The spice and fruit flavors from the New Zealand hops dominate but are backed up by the slight malt flavor of the grains. It is light in calories and carbs but still big on flavor. Whether you’re at home or out enjoying an active lifestyle, this beer won’t weigh you down.
–Beach Blonde Blonde Ale (5.0% ABV): Refreshing and bright, this Blonde Ale finishes with a satisfying hint of citrus – a bombshell of a brew that brings the Florida coast to your palate.
–Watermelon Wheat (4.2% ABV): No description available.
–Bimini Twist IPA (7.0% ABV): Our perfect IPA: Intense citrus and floral hop aroma coupled with slight hints of citrus make this beer as refreshing as a Bimini sea breeze. Don’t let this one get away.
–Stern Line Oatmeal Stout (5.2% ABV): This isn’t your ordinary stout. Sessionable, yet more complex than most oatmeal stouts with flavors of dark-roasted coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, and lightly toasted oatmeal flakes. This is on unfathomably deep brew.
Here’s What I Thought:
–Ping Pong Kolsch: This was a crisp, clean easy drinking kolsch.
–Rod Bender Red Ale: This was a smooth red ale that was malt forward.
–Mission To Marzen: This was a smooth, lighter version of your typical Marzen. Went down easy with hints of caramel.
–Gluten Friendly Blonde Ale: This tasted almost identical to the Beach Blonde Blonde Ale. Crisp with hints of citrus.
–Grapefruit Shandy: A sweet shandy with notes of grapefruit. Extremely crisp, citrusy and easy drinking.
–A Wake Coffee Blonde: What I love about this beer is the fact that it looks like a blonde, so you think you’ll get subtle ale flavors, but get hit with huge coffee notes.
–Lemon Shandy:A sweet shandy with notes of lemon. Extremely crisp, citrusy and easy drinking.
–Floating Dock Light IPA: It’s a hop forward IPA with hints of fruit. You get hoppiness with some watermelon and tropical fruit.
–Beach Blonde Blonde Ale: This was a crisp Blonde that had a nice hoppy/citrus finish.
-Watermelon Wheat: This had both the layers of a true to style wheat beer with some watermelon on top of that. Nice, crisp, easy drinking.
–Bimini Twist IPA: Hoppier with more citrus notes on the aroma and the tongue than the Floating Dock Light IPA. Great hop forward IPA.
–Stern Line Oatmeal Stout: Probably my favorite beer of the bunch. Roasted malts, chocolate and roasted coffee flavors, but extremely sessionable.
So all in all with the ambiance of the brewery and the beers we were served I would give 3 Daughters Brewing Company 4.5 out of 5 piggys!
And during the week they have a bunch of things going on to bring you back to the brewery. Monday is trivia night, they have beer yoga nights and they also have live bands you can check out Thursday-Sunday!
